On September 27, 1848, there was a hurricane that passed through this area of Madeira Beach and much of the shoreline was destroyed. A man named John LeVeque, who was thought to be a pirate out looking to collect treasures, was looking to find a way through to safe harbor and found this opening that was not known about before. It came to be known as John's Pass in honor of him.
