originally named for a famous pirate who settled down in the area and created a whaling station in the late 1600s, Jones Beach State park was attracting more than 1.5 million visitors annually by 1930. In the last 80 years, more than 1.5 billion people have come down to the beach, primarily to swim. However, due to the popularity of golf on Long Island, it was inevitable that an 18-hole pitch and putt course would be added. The par-3 course sits next to the boardwalk and Atlantic Ocean. Itís an interesting course that plays differently depending upon how the sea breezes are blowing. Children who are at least 10 years old and accompanied by a parent or guardian can be introduced to the wonderful game of golf here. There is also a miniature golf course on-site. The facilities are open April through November.
