Description

This is a composite shot of a woman on a kayak in the world's brightest bioluminescent bay, Puerto Mosquito, on Vieques Island, Puerto Rico.
The blue glow of the water is caused by single-celled organisms called dinoflagellates and is very difficult to capture without a long exposure.
The Milky Way peeked out from behind the rain clouds long enough to capture our galaxy in the background and the model was backlit by another crew member hiding in the mangroves behind her.
This image was originally shot as a cover photo for the January 2017 Vieques Insider travel magazine.
