Description
When hiking through vast sandstone landscapes, we often come across potholes. These are wells in the stone that fill with water when it rains. The water often remains in these holes for days, sometimes months. The water level can become a matter of life or death for the unsuspecting creatures who may fall inside them. Once, while hiking through Zion on our way to Heaps Canyon, we came across a pothole that had a dead rattlesnake floating on its watery surface. For this snake, the water level was high enough to drown in, and low enough to prevent escape. This is what we call a "keeper" pothole. The journey ahead of us through Heaps would show us many more "keeper" potholes, many of which were human-trapping size.
