Description
"A Gathering of Kings"
As many as 100,000 king penguins nest under the backdrop of jagged glaciated mountains on this beach on the remote island of South Georgia near Antarctica. The spectacular landscape dotted with tussock grasses and filled with penguins and seals is unlike anything found anywhere else on Earth. The brown chicks, about 11 months old in this photograph, must still depend on their parents to bring them fish from the ocean.
Accessible only by a four day ship sailing from Tierra del Fuego in South America, this remote sub-Antarctic island has a permanent population of only 16 scientists. Of historical significance, this is where Sir Ernest Shackleton landed to successfully organize the rescue of his doomed Antarctica expedition in 1916.

What a magical glorious scene! I wonder if they are a noisy crowd? I also kind of hate to wonder what this exact spot looks like today? Are there still this many penguins? Are those mountains still so covered in snow? I wonder what a difference 7 years has made. Let's hope the world wakes up soon! Love your artwork and your sharing the beauty that we are missing!. . . . fv
Tom Schwabel replied:
Yes they are a noisy bunch. And a bit stinky too. Fortunately I believe this penguin population is stable. Some other species, the ones only found in true Antarctica which have a larger dependence on ice, are not so stable.

Superb shot of these king penguins! The mountains in the background give the image a majestic touch, that's for sure.

Love this pic, Tom. Always wanted to go to Antarctica. I used to process all the E6 films for the Australian Antarctic Division back in the day. Such an extraordinarily beautiful place. L&F.
Tom Schwabel replied:
Thanks Sean. This place was probably my all-time favorite wildlife in landscape location. Other places in the Antarctic had great wildlife or great landscapes, but few if any had the combination of here!
