A close friend of German composer Richard Wagner, Spanish artist Rogelio de Egusquiza y Barrena (1845-1915), completed a number of paintings featuring scenes and characters from Wagnerian opera. This one, dating from 1906, is of a mystical female from the opera Parsifal, who is a repulsive creature or a beautiful maiden, depending on where you encounter her. Clearly, in this instance, Egusquiza chose to illustrate the latter.
