Description
After heavy flooding that caused severe devastation, rice fields lay under water at the village of Kuppappuram in the Alappuzha district of Kerala. Getting to this location from Alappuzha was difficult. The floodwaters had cut many routes and I traveled with a relief boat that took stranded villages home. The only part of Kuppappuram that was dry was the area around the relief centre.
Floods occur frequently in this district and villagers are generally prepared, though on this occasion, 69 people had lost their lives as well as the loss of valuable livestock. It was some entertainment for them to witness a painter at work and I was inundated with cups of chai (sweet Indian tea) and fruit. I returned to Alappuzha with a heavy heart after seeing such devastation that somehow escapes this image, of water and passing debris. India during the monsoon months can be a very dangerous place.
