These Leaf-eating Ladybirds first met on a Summer's morning in the vegetable garden. It was love at first sight!
Unlike their carnivorous cousins who devour Aphids, 28-Spotted Ladybirds or Hadda Beetles (Epilachna vigintioctopunctata), are vegetarians. They prefer plants in the nightshade family, which includes potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, capsicum etc. They don't touch the fruit.
Native to the tropics and temperate areas of southeastern Asia and India, they were accidentally introduced into Australia, New Zealand and parts of South America.
These little lovelies were in my Sydney garden on a tomato leaf.
