Description
The Lakota Sioux, Cheyenne and other Native tribes believed that an injured
or lame animal, in order to survive, had to be smarter or more ingenious than
the unaffected ones. Therefore indian names that contained "lame" in them
were a negative conotation. Examples, Lame Deer or Lame Beaver, etc.
Coyotes were known as the Great Spirit's dog by the Sioux. Crazy Horse was known to have a pet coyote.
