It amazes me that from one spot on Williamson Road you can see the Mill Mountain Star, the H&C Coffee sign, the Dr. Pepper sign and a street sign that says Salem Ave. Since I live in Salem the green light pointing in that direction is significant, too :) This was a fun one to paint.
I was researching the H&C Coffee Company and found out that two brothers, Harold and Clarence Woods (hence- H&C :) started the company back in 1927. They purchased one 150 lb. bag of green coffee at a time then roasted and ground it before delivering it themselves. The company was known for providing good quality at a reasonable price and respecting and caring for their workers and clients. During the 1940's Harold made a trip to New York city where he was impressed with their neon signs and decided to have one made which has been moved and restored but is now on a building at the corner of Salem Avenue and Williamson Road in Roanoke, Virginia.
