I like the case one of a kind
An early diesel switch engine, produced by the Electro-Motive Corporation of LaGrange, IL., and known as a "SW1", shows off it's factory-applied paint scheme as it works near Oak Island, N.J., in 1950. In an effort to boost the sales of diesel locomotives post WWII, the manufacturers would often create colorful paint schemes to apply, thus ending the end of the drab, black, era of the iron horse. Each railroad company would get a new "off the shelf" paint scheme, applied by the factory's marketing team and individualized to each railroad. This was the scheme "suggested" by manufacturer EMC and applied to the diesel sold to the Lehigh Valley RR. Later Lehigh Valley RR settled on a more utilitarian cranberry-red color without the added stripes and colors. They DID keep the flag, a longtime corporate emblem, seen under the window on the cab. EMC later became EMD, or Electro-Motive Division of General Motors; they produced thousands of locomotives under that corporate identity. This locomo...
John Dziobko, Jr., was born in Newark, N.J., in 1932 and at a young age was enthralled by the trains that ran near him. Specifically, the old steam engines that were commonplace until the early 1950's, but also the colorful new diesels that were replacing them seemingly everywhere. Unlike many of his contemporaries, John decided at a early point in his photography to use color film as his medium of choice, almost exclusively. Because of that decision, John has accrued a body of work that is colorized in an era when black and white, large format film still ruled as the standard photographic medium.
