Leonard Darwin (1850-1943), British eugenicist and soldier. Darwin, the fourth son and eighth child of Charles Darwin, was chairman of the British Eugenics Society between 1911 and 1928, and Honorary President from 1928 to 1943. He dedicated his book 'The Need for Eugenic Reform' (1926) to his father, who had published his landmark work on evolution ('On the Origin of Species') in 1859. Leonard Darwin was also a soldier (reaching the rank of Major) and politician, serving as a Member of Parliament from 1892 to 1895. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
