Description
Lest We Forget Devenish Silo Art by Joan Stratton - A painted art piece including stage 1 and 2 of the wonderfully painted silos in the small rural village of Devenish, Victoria, Australia. The silo artworks (wall art artist Cam Scale) are a tribute to the 50 young men and women from the Devenish community who enlisted in military service during the First World War. At the time, that was one in six residents from this very tiny town. Wall artist Cam Scale also wanted to honour the seven Devenish diggers that never made it home.
Stage one (two tall silos) was officially unveiled on Anzac Day in 2018. A tribute to help celebrate the 100-year centenary of the end of the First World War. The artwork depicts a stunning image of a WW1 nurse and a modern female military medic in the Australian Armed Forces. This mural also depicts the changing role of women in the military and society in general. Stage two (short silo) was officially unveiled one year later on Anzac Day 2019. This mural is a tribute to the Australian Light Horse. The Australian Light Horse were mounted troops with characteristics of both cavalry and mounted infantry, who served in the Second Boer War and WW 1 (australiansiloarttrail.com).
This piece forms part of my Street Art Wall Art Graffiti Collection. Where known I have credited the wall/street/graffiti artist and listed the location of the piece.
With this piece I have drawn the sky and pieced together numerous photos as you can not see the three silos all together without other obstacles obscuring parts of each silo. The Lest We Forget cross is superimposed from a dedication near the main street which runs parallel with the silos. I have incorporated the surroundings and given the picture an arty feel, to enhance and/or blend with the street/wall/graffiti art to create an overall art piece.
