Artist's Description
Coloured FLAIR magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a section through the brain of a 60 year old patient with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). This disease leads to the destruction of myelin around nerves in the brain's white matter. In this scan areas of demyelination are bright. It is caused by the JC virus, but only occurs in immunocompromised individuals.
