Description
We all know her as the Statue of Liberty, but the statue, a gift from the French is officially "Liberty Enlightening The World" and is emblematic of Freedom, an icon known around the world. And I have to say that it's hard to grow jaded seeing it, at least as a visitor to NYC. And seeing her from the water, I think, is when she sings the loudest. Feeling the breeze off the water and seeing Lady Liberty rising above it, one has a real feeling for what it must have been like as an immigrant in years gone by approaching Ellis Island after a journey across the sea to a new life in America.
A few lines from Emma Lazarus' classic poem 'The New Colossus' sum it up best I think:
..."Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
