Basking in sunlight from the window, a young woman reposes and relaxes with an excellent book. Reading is a gift that opens new worlds.
And while one can argue that What one reads makes a difference in what worlds are opened and just how grandly – a diet of comic books, for example, palls after awhile in the same way that chips and dips lead the body to crave sustenance of greater nature – the very act of reading in the 21st century is important.
So busy are we with the busy things – namely wrapped around our phones and tablets, texting this person and watching that YouTube video and retweeting that meme – that we are in danger of mistaking this time for the very different, very meditative, very peaceful time we can discover when we grab a book, find a sunny spot, and spend an hour with Prince Caspian of Narnia, or King Aragorn of the Lord of the Rings, or Hercule Poirot of Agatha Christie fame.
During this time – which flies so quickly! – we leave the world of today with its constant emphasis that we be modern and up to date and technically savvy and working harder not smarter – and immerse ourselves in the lives and thoughts and issues of others. Great books are called such for a reason, because they explore the great concepts of life that never go away, and which each generation tries to understand and solve: why are we here? What do we do, in our short existence, to make our time here meaningful? Why is there suffering? How does one find joy?
Light Reading invites the viewer to join the young woman in her perusal of literature, to step away from the noise and the hubbub and the incessant demands that we Do something, and just enjoy the beauty and artistry of an excellently told story.
