The Linn Cove Viaducts is an S shaped bridge that is an iconic favorite view on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This is the last section of the Blue Ridge Parkway to be completed when the highway was built.

This photograph is a good example of how you must take a little extra trouble to get a better shot. From the level of the road, the S shape is not pronounced at all. To get the feel of the curve, as seen in this photograph, you must climb above the road. You park at a turnout just north of the bridge, and walk about 100 yards south, back toward the bridge. Near mile marker 304, on the right side of the road, maybe 10 or 20 yards before the expansion joint of the bridge, there is a steep path next to a large rock. Climb up about 30 feet, and onto the somewhat precipitous edge of the rock, where you can carefully sit, and find 3 spots to put your tripod. The three spots you find will probably be the same as the ones I used. It's a somethat scary place to climb and sit, and a somewhat scary place to perch your tripod and camera. I used a panoramic head and a zoom lens set to 65mm, turned to vertical, and stitched together over 90 horizontal degrees of the scene to produce this panoramic view at reasonably high resolution of 5509 x 2778 pixels. Don't fall if you try this! I found myself really wishing I had brought a safety tether rope to tie to a tree and around my waist.

Another problem, if you try to replicate this iconic image yourself, is that the location is well known to many photographers. On a day with good weather and peak folliage, you will have to be patient and wait for other photographers to take advantage of the best light. When they leave, you can then try your luck with light they thought was not going to be as good. Likewise, there is a constant stream of pedestrians and vehicles over the road. A sports car or motorcycle or bicycle might be a welcome addition, but a generic car is rather boring.
