Droplets of water sparkle in the sunlight. A little green heron has just caught a fish. As quick as a wink, he sprang to the top of a bent reed with his catch. His colors mimic the reeds around him. His breast is deep red and his wings are a deep green. The wing feathers are outlined with white. He has patches of brilliant yellow around his yellow-orange eyes and dark beak. His legs are yellowish orange. The surface of the water is covered with duck weed. Bits of the duck weed stuck to his fish and beak.

This is my first painting on a gesso masonite board. I used acrylic paints. I found it quite different from my usual painting support, which is stretched canvas. Because of the smooth surface, I automatically painted with quite a lot of detail. This patterned bird made for a complicated subject. This is one of the reasons that I kept the surrounding area relatively simple in composition.

Although born in upstate New York, I grew up mostly in Nevada and California. The fabulous panoramic views of the far west inspired me to begin painting and photographing it’s beauty. I’ve lived in various areas in the states and in Europe but always had the desire to express through painting and photography. While living in the Mediterranean, I was especially influenced by the great Renaissance art and the chiaroscuro work of Caravaggio. I began with oils, worked with a wide variety of mediums but now mostly work in acrylic, oils, and photography.
