Description
A herd of llamas (Lama glama) crosses a dirt road in northern Chile with the 6071m /19,918ft Guallatiri volcano looming in the background. They are one of South America's 2 domestic camelids and closely related to camels, in high altitude regions where agriculture is difficult are often the mainstay of the rural economy. This area is part of the Las Vicunas National Reserve and also the Lauca Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO in 1981.
Guallatiri is one of the most active volcanos in northern Chile and fumaroles can frequently been seen emitting smoke from near its summit and on the southern flank (the view in this image) where there are several vents. It's last confirmed eruption was in 1960, although it seems likely it erupted in 1985 and there was increased fumarole activity in 2015 which coincided with a magnitude 6.4 earthquake nearby (the epicentre was approx 7km from the summit).
