Light micrograph of a section of the human liver showing a typical appearance of cirrhosis, a general term for the end result of progressive damage to liver cells (hepatocytes) from numerous possible causes. Here, bands of fibrous tissue (stained blue) appear to disrupt the arrangement of liver cells (pink); when no indications of cause are present, such as fat deposits found in alcoholic cirrhosis, the cirrhosis is classed as being cryptogenic. The structural changes caused by the fibrous tissue leads to reduced cell function and a disturbance of blood flow through the organ. Magnification: x20 at 35mm size.
