Description
Light micrograph of a small freshwater crustacean Cyclops sp. (Copepoda). In the plankton of ponds, copepods are the most common of all animals. Here a specimen of Cyclops swims with hopping movements of its rowing legs (obscured under the body). Long antennae (seen against the body, head at upper left), assist in floatation in the water. Whereas most floaters" obtain at least part of their food by filtering the water, Cyclops mainly eat the decaying remains of plants and animals. In turn they are eaten, and, due to their large numbers, play an important role in the aquatic food chain. Magnification: x30 at 35mm size."
