Description
Located within the Altamha River delta lies a land of enchantment, one of the world's largest freshwater marsh systems.Once a working rice plantation, Dutch engineers designed a system of dikes, levies and water level control devices to divert fresh river water flowing down to the Atlantic Ocean. Now part of the Nature Conservancy, it is a diverse habitat to fish, fowl and mammals and other assorted creatures. But for me, it is a window into a world I rarely see and it's only a 20 minute drive.

Gorgeous, Laura. We used to fish the Altamaha River. We had to camp on cliffs instead of sandbars, though, because of the HUGE alligators on the bars!
Laura Ragland replied:
I have seen those cliffs, they're inland a bit.My camping river of yesterdays is the Satilla River.Nice seeing your memories here, Kathy.Glad this pic brought them to mind.
