I love the light breaking through the darkness. You really captured and expanded on the saturated color of the lit area vs. the muted tree canopy. Love it!

love this too, you've captured the light, hard to master.

Beautiful work of art art Paul. Love the contrast.

This is a great art work. It is fun to see your photo on canvas, and to print them here for art shows.

I am extremely happy with the quality of the CLARITY of the print!! The tube it arrived in guaranteed no damage could harm it. And yes, the print did arrive far sooner than anticipated .... I am genuinely satisfied and impressed.

Just arrived two days ago, and I took it to be framed. The image is a bit fuzzy in parts like the trees in the foreground but still a beautiful shot of the foothills in autumn. Nevada is gorgeous in autumn. Nice pic. Just got back from framer. It is beautiful.

Arrived yesterday and took to be framed. I used to live on Beacon Hill in Boston just uphill from Acorn Street. This piece is beautiful and brings back memories. Now framed. Love it.

Artist's Description

If anyone takes the time to turn and look back towards the UW arboretum visitor center after a short walk up the first trail, they are rewarded with this view. The visitor stands at the center of a thickly shaded wood grotto. A lone tree is visible, brightly lit by the sun and framed by the darkness. The light leaking through the black canopy above gives a sense of stars filling the night sky. This painting attempts to capture this juxtaposition of day and night.

About Paul Illian

Paul grew up in the swamps of Florida when he both eagerly explored and dreamed of getting the heck out of there. He showed early promise in art, his work being accepted for touring national shows while he was still in middle school. Upon graduation from high school, he applied for admission to FTU (now UCF) in both art and engineering. He was denied acceptance by the art department as his work was considered "hopelessly rigid". He was also discouraged from joining the engineering department as he was considered as "having no structure or discipline in his methodologies". He then did the only logical thing possible; he enlisted in the Marine Corps for four years. Upon leaving the Corps, he returned to school and got his engineering...
