LOU one of four clown watercolor paintings,
FROSTY POPOV PAVLOV and LOU.
loosely sketched with a 6B pencil on 90gsm cartridge paper, then soaked and stretched
to board and dried overnight. Background rewet and color applied liberally wet in wet.
Source material was a 24inch high free standing Mannequin / toy clown. The exercise was
just to see if I could still draw freehand from life (so to speak) without upsetting anyones vanity.
viewing the clown from several angles I produced a dozen or so sketches and selected the four
best and stretched them to board as described above.
having painted the first attempt in similar colors to the Mannequin I decided to use
a different range of colors for the remaining sketches.
I actually painted at least six or seven and kept the best four which you can see here.
the others I gave away.
Using a Mannequin or a soft toy as a model when creating loose style sketches
allows you focus on style and technique without bothering too much about likeness.
