"Love is the bridge between you and everything."--Rumi
There are so many amazing night-time images of Tokyo's famous "Rainbow Bridge" lit up with glowing colors against the city's brilliant skyline that they made me wonder if I could produce something as appealing in black and white. The challenge was a good one. Working to balance contrasting gradiences was the fun part. The harder (but admittedly also fun) part, was applying a mixture of suggestive minimalism and more definitive form to create something that is both recognizable and maybe a little surrealistic.
In the end, I was intrigued by the contrasts as well as the similarities between this B&W bridge result and my "Savannah Bridge the Morning after Hurricane Matthew" digital photograph. The irony for me is that the exceptional visual effects in the Savannah Bridge image came from the impact of the hurricane on the atmosphere.
The quote by Rumi from which the title is taken has long been one of my favorites. I feel it works well because of how interconnected the different elements in the image appear to be: the skyline in the background, the flowing water in the foreground, the bridge itself, and the dots and splashes of light emerging out of darkness.
