Description
One late-winter morning when I was 9, I looked out the cabin window and saw a mountain lion stalking deer on the cliffs above the cottonwood draw. Slowly swishing its long tail back and forth, it seemed to flow over the rocks silent, liquid and molten as sun-glowing honey. It soon disappeared among the thick trees, but the vision haunted me. The next day, I walked down to the stream banks, where I found the lion's big round tracks squished deep into the mud. Because Dad had told me that mountain lions rarely if ever attack people (which was true back then), I didn't feel afraid, exactly. But I had that strange feeling you get when someone may be watching you, but you don't know where they are. It felt like that mountain lion was everywhere -- behind every tree, at the top of every cliff, in the very air that I was breathing. I didn't see the lion again, though Dad surprised it sleeping under the big cedar by our door one morning, and through the years I've heard lions and found their tracks. But the special lion I saw has dwelled ever after in my drawings. This detail from the Childhood Quilt Painting is based on drawings I made at age 9 -- perhaps the same day I saw him, though he wasn't in a tree at that moment but among the cliffs. As you can see, I had observed deer all my life, struggling through deep snow or the icy creek. The jackrabbit, too, has always been one of my favorite winter friends.

Your memory is so vivid and so visual. I so enjoy your wonderful drawings and stories. Your description made me feel that mountain lion, and also the vulnerability of the deer and rabbit.
