Later, an older woman took me aside. She said, "Ma Parker is taking care of three little orphaned children in a tent outside of town. She takes in children and treats them as though they were her own. She has a heart of gold, and needs help keeping up as she has no money."
Alfred said, "We could give her money if that would help."
"No, that will not do," she said. "She is a proud woman and would not accept charity."
I told her I had an idea and would take care of it.
Zeke said, "We must do something." Zeke was an orphan, one-of-a-kind and knew what it was like to be alone.
We walked to the edge of town and found her tent. She was busy washing the hair of a little girl. Two boys sat on a blanket. Other than that, the tent was bare. I said, "I'm here on official business."
"I'll be right with you, Sheriff Wurtherington." She towel dried the girl's hair as best she could with an old rag.
