This piece was inspired by an Optical Coherence Tomography(OCT) scan a doctor who is teaching me about pathology sent me.

Macular holes are small breaks in the retina where the macula is. The macula is the area of the retina that provides the sharpest central vision needed for reading or driving. Macular holes are usually age-related, occur in people above the age of 60 and often alter vision. Inside the eye there is this gel-like substance called vitreous. As we age the vitreous shrinks. In areas where the vitreous is firmly attached, it can tug and pull on the retina. This can cause a macular hole. High myopia (nearsightedness) or an injury to the eye can also be a cause of macular holes.
