Description
LHC magnet prototype. View of the end of a prototype quadrupole superconducting magnet, designed for use in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) accelerator at CERN, Europe's largest particle physics laboratory. These magnets are unique in that they surround two beam pipes side by side within the single magnet assembly. The LHC will accelerate protons up to energies of around 7 TeV (tera-electron volts, million million eV). The LHC will be built 'piggy back' on top of the existing 27-km LEP accelerator ring, and is planned to start operations in 2002.
