Description
Maharaja Ranjit Singh
Maharaja Ranjit Singh or 'The Lion of Punjab' (1780-1839) as he was known was the first Sikh Emperor. In1801 he became The Maharaja of Punjab at the age of 20. The Sikh Empire, also known as Punjab was a secular state under Ranjit Singh; the Sikhs were generally not known to force either those in their employ or the inhabitants of the country they ruled to convert to Sikhism.
He was the first Asian ruler to modernize his army to European standards and was well known for filling the leadership positions in his kingdom (Darbar)with men of various religions. People were recognized and promoted on their ability and not their religion. There was no ferocity in his disposition and he never punished a criminal with death even under circumstances of aggravated offence.
Maharaja Ranjit Singh is remembered for uniting the Punjab as a strong nation and his possession of the Koh-i-Noor diamond, which was given to him by Shuja Shah Durrani of Afghanistan. His most lasting legacy was the golden beautification of the Harmandir Sahib, the most revered Gurudwara(temple) of the Sikhs, with marble and gold, from which the popular name of the "Golden Temple" is derived.
The respect shown by those who worked for the Maharajah is best highlighted, by a Muslim, Fakir Azizuddin (His foreign Minister), who when meeting with the British Governor-General George Eden, replied to the question of which of the Maharajah's eyes was missing,(he had lost one eye to smallpox) "The Maharajah is like the sun and the sun has only one eye. The splendor and luminosity of his single eye is so much that I have never dared to look at his other eye." In a land and time when being blinded disqualified one from ruling, having the sight of only one eye was never a problem for Ranjit Singh, who remarked that it gave him the ability to see things more acutely.
