Maize niblet. Polarised light micrograph of a maize niblet, the seed of the maize plant (Zea mays). A seed contains an embryo, a fertilised ovule from which a new plant can grow (dark blue, upper left), and a supply of food called the endosperm (blue/purple, spanning from centre left to upper right). The food is used either while the embryo develops, or during germination. Magnification: x8 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
