A male pileated woodpecker searches a tree in Tampa, Florida's Lettuce Lane Park for a snack of carpenter ants. Pileated woodpeckers (dryocopus pileatus) can be found in forests with mature trees, dead trees and downed wood all across southern Canada, The west coast of the United States down to northern California and all of the states east of the Mississippi River. They don't migrate so they can be found year round in the same areas. They like large mature trees for nesting and make a rectangular hole for the entrance to their nest that they dig out of the tree which they only use once. The pileated woodpeckers diet consists mainly of carpenter ants, but also eats termites, woodboring beetle larva, caterpillars, cockroaches,, grasshoppers and other ants. They also eat wild fruit, berries and nuts when they need to suppliment their diets, even including poison ivy berries. Like many of the old generation of photographers, I began with a Kodak box brownie when I was a kid. When I saw what resulted, I was hooked. Having grown up with an aunt who was a professional artist, I was always exposed to the creative arts. As a result, I have always liked to paint. Later I went to the Defense Information School at Ft. Benjamin Harrison in 1966 where I got more intensive training in photography and photojournalism and practiced that craft in Vietnam and the United States. I studied with the Famous Artistís and Famous Photographerís Schools to help hone my skills.
