This painting of a man and woman devoid of artificial clothing to conceal their nakedness standing amid the ruins of - no doubt a bloody aftermath of human battle, and standing on the instrument of that battle serves as a reminder that no matter how rich, how famous, how powerful and how influential they may appear to be wrapped in their garments of velvet and finery - in truth this in the final analysis is what all humans actually are. Indeed hard for the false prophets and pilgrim minded to accept but no amount of hand wringing, and puritan cries shall change it.
