Description
Margerie Glacier Glacier Bay by Barbara Snyder
The Margerie Glacier is a favorite stop for all most if not all cruise ships taking the Alaskan Inside Passage. It is one of several famous glaciers found in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve.
The glacier stands about 44 stores high if you compare it to a skyscraper and is 21 miles long. Or about twice as high the large cruise ship you will likely be on if you ever visit, which I highly recommend.
We were day on a a rainy, overcast day. What you see in the image that looks like a waterfall is really a chunk of the glacier ice falling off the face of the glacier.
We are about a mile away for the face and we seen it starting to crumble and then heard what sounded like a very close lighting strike with a long rumbling, thunder following it. I was an awesome sight to see and hear.
The size of the chunk that fell was about the size of a two or three story building and you can see the huge waves and the ocean spray that it caused. The spray itself splashed upwards of several stories.
There are three versions of this image in our portfolio.
