This was a commission and one I enjoyed doing very much. This is a beautiful racing yacht on a beautiful stretch of water on a beautiful day. All of those "beautifuls" made me made for great subject matter for a painting! I love sailing ships and sailboats and the art that they simply are. Look at the lines, the shapes, the contrasts, the textures, the warm and cool colors-many of the elements of art are there to begin with! My very favorite part of painting sailing vessels are the sails. I love how the light plays on the sails and through the sails and the shadows, as well, play on and through the sails. And then there's the water! Water is endlessly fascinating to watch and to paint. Painting it, to me, becomes and exercise in noticing the patterns and the breaks in the patterns, committing them to paper. On this day, the Mark IV had a worthy crew. I enjoyed painting them in as well. All in all, I think this is a successful painting that did capture the beauty of that boa...
Jim is a graduate of West Virginia University. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Art in 1970 and a Master's of Instructional Design in 1977. An artist all of his life, Jim took some instruction with Leland McLelland after moving to Central Ohio at the end of 1977. This was a pivotal time for Jim because he finally learned watercolor techniques which allowed him to illustrate. A realistic interpreter of what he sees, Jim finally felt like he'd found the medium that he could identify with. Though watercolor can be unforgiving, Jim has learned to create beautiful watercolors of the things he loves best.
