Typical moss covered tree on the Hall Of Mosses trail in the Hoh Rain Forest, Olympic National Park, Washington.
The Hall of Mosses Trail is a famous hiking trail in Olympic National Park. It is located in the Hoh Rain Forest on the Olympic Peninsula in the west of Washington state, USA. It is a 0.8 mile loop trail with 100ft elevation gain.
The forest along the trail is filled with old temperate trees covered in green and brown mosses. Trees include bigleaf maples and Sitka spruces. The mosses on the trees do not damage the trees. However, the trees can fall by the winds in storms because of their shorter roots due to the abundance of nutrients and water in the forest. Many trees and mosses grow from and over the fallen tree trunks.
Along the trail there is a side path of 200 feet that leads to a grove of maple trees covered with epiphytic spikemoss (the "Hall of Mosses"). The trail takes approximately an hour to complete. At first there is an elevated inc...
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I have a long-standing interest in photography. I had my first camera since before my teens. I used a (Minolta) film camera up until about 8 years ago when my camera failed to function while on a trip to Yellowstone National Park. Although a little intimidated, I then ventured into the world of digital photography and I've never looked back. My passion is nature. I started out primarily photographing flowers, plants, and critters that I would find in my garden. I love gardening and the great outdoors. I am always planning my next adventure, and I'll always have my camera in hand. I'm already...

Randy Rosenberger
Lovely imagery, Heidi! Love the final product, as it is superlative in presentation. However, would like to know the medium, if it is a photo altered, or an acrylic painting, oil painting, etc. No matter what it is done in, it is still gorgeous, but viewers like to know what they are purchasing, so maybe the type of medium would be good. I loved your description, as it was a traveling tour and history lesson. Thanks much for sharing!
Heidi Smith replied:
Hi Randy! Thank you so very much. This is a digitally painted photograph. I'm not sure why it says "None" under Medium in the activity area. I have it posted as a photograph. Thank you so very much for taking the time to pay a visit and write a lovely note. I certainly appreciate it.
