I feed birds in my yard, specifically inviting them so I can paint them and photograph them. Every spring time is a very colorful season because the birds change into their full mating plumage, which is significantly different for most local Southern California species than the color of their plumage at other times of the year. In the spring--starting mid winter actually--the makes intensify their colors tremendously.

On this picture you see a male finch, which I believe is the common house finch. But I find nothing common about it other than its numbers are numerous. At any given time I may see 15 to 20 of them fighting for room at the feeder. Of course this type of finch is not the only one that visits my feeder but they seem to be the most aggressive and larger than most of the non-migratory birds.
