Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the world, when measured from its base at the bottom of the sea. Above the ocean, it rises 13,803 feet, but from the sea bottom, it rises 33,500 feet to the summit. Mauna means 'mountain' in the Hawaiian language and Kea means 'white'. Hence, the name of the mountain is due to the often snow-covered slopes. This image is from the summit, looking down on a smaller cinder cone on the slope of the main portion of the Mountain and looking toward Mauna Loa, another of the world's largest mountains. The mountain is sacred to the Hawaiians.
As a fine-art photographer of many years (initially in black and white large format film), my purpose is to capture and share the incredible beauty in our world. I have a passion for travel and photographing the many places I have been fortunate to explore. I am enthralled by both the grand scene of a live volcano or brilliant sunrise and the amazing detail and design of each tiny part of a flower.
