While working out the composition for this painting I decided to leave the model out and just put in the vase and flower and then paint the model's reflection along with the vase and the white orchid. About halfway through the painting I found it very difficult to paint the two together so I decided to finish the figure first then paint the orchid over the model.
When the painting was about three quarters finished and I could see the finished effect, I still had not put in the flowers reflection. Something told me to wait and the model would not be back for a couple of days anyway.
After studying the painting for two days I realized that there was no model that I could have put in the composition but rather the beautiful flower was the beautiful woman in the mirror. Like the caterpillar that turns into a butterfly a metamorphous had taken place in my painting without my knowing it.
I like the idea of writing about my paintings but a lot of times I don't know where to start but then I realized that the whole story for me is in the title.
