Description
This piece was inspired by a flourescein angiography photograph I had seen while shadowing an ophthalmologist.
Flourescein angiography is a medical procedure in which a flourescent dye is injected into the bloodstream. The dye highlights the blood vessels in the back of the eye so that they can be photographed. A retinal microaneurysm is a tiny ballon-like bulges that protrudes from the walls of small vessels in the back of the eye and can leak fluid or blood into the retina. Retinal microaneurysms can be caused by several pathologic conditions such as hypertension, venous occlusions or sickle cell disease and they are also the hallmark of diabetic retinopathy. This piece was inspired from a patient with diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of vision loss among people with diabetes.
