Description
Mill where Livingstone worked. Illustration of the cotton mill on the Clyde in Blantyre, Scotland, where British missionary and explorer David Livingstone (1813-1873) worked as a child from the age of ten. Livingstone studied medicine and theology in Glasgow before being ordained in 1840. He explored southern Africa, travelled along the Zambesi River, and discovered and named the Victoria Falls. He mapped parts of Africa's interior, wrote accounts of the native peoples, and campaigned against slavery. Lauded as a hero in Victorian Britain, he died in Africa. Artwork from 'The Life and Explorations of Dr Livingstone', first published in around 1870.
