Description
Miriam of Magdala – Μαρiαμ ή Μαγδαληνή
Miriam of Magdala is venerated in Eastern Orthodoxy, Anglican Communion, Lutheranism, Roman Catholic and several Protestant churches. The Eastern Orthodox churches commemorate her on Sunday of the Myrrhbearers, which is the second Sunday after Pascha (Easter). The Protestant denominations honor her as a highly respected apostle, disciple and friend of Jesus, (UMW). She is venerated as a saint, through icons, religious paintings, special prayers, and other devotions. Her Feast day is July 22.
Μαρiαμ ή Μαγδαληνή is the only person named by any of the canonical Gospels as a witness to all three: Jesus’ crucifixion, burial, and discovery of the empty tomb. Mark 15:40, Matthew 27:56, John 19:25, Luke 23:49, Mark 16:1 (TNAB). In all four Gospels she is the first to witness the Resurrection of Jesus. John 20:16 Mark 16:1, Matthew 28:1, Luke 24:10 (TNAB). “He is risen” Matthew 28:7-10, Mark 16:9-11, John 20:18 (TNAB).
Miriam of Magdala – appears more than other women in the canonical Scriptures and is shown as being a close follower of Jesus. She is recognized as one of the most important women in the ministry of Jesus, persistently referring to her by name. Luke 8:1-3 (TNAB). In the Eastern Orthodox Churches, she is referred to as “the Apostle to the Apostles”- “Apostola Apostolorum,” and “Equal to the Apostles,” and the canonical Scriptures support this proposition. Mark 16:6-7, Matthew 28:5-10 (TNAB).
In Apocryphal texts, she is portrayed as a visionary and a leader of the movement. In the Gospel of John, she is the special disciple of Jesus send to announce his resurrection to Peter and the rest of the disciples. She is seen as the apostle whom he loved more than the others – “The Beloved Disciple”. She is the one who has a deeper understanding of his teachings and is asked to impart this to the other disciples. See Ehrman, Pagels, and King. See Gnostic Gospel of Mary, Gospel of Phillip, Pistis Sophia; and Apocryphon of John and the Sophia of Jesus Christ published in Nag Hammadi Library.
