Artist's Description

This 208 feet tall concrete and steel cross stands high above the marshes of the Matanzas River and grounds of the Mission Nombre De Dios. In 1565 a Spanish admiral by the name of Pedro Menendez de Aviles planted a wooden cross and celebrated the first Thanksgiving on American soil. The Great Cross was dedicated in September 1966 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of St Augustine being the oldest continuously occupied settlement of European and African-American origin in the United States. The cross weighs 70 tons and is built of 200 stainless steel plates with the lower 65 feet filled with concrete to prevent potential damage from hurricane force winds. The granite slabs surrounding the base have names inscribed as memorials from family or loved ones.
