Description
A beautiful monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) feeds on nectar from tiny yellow flowers. These butterflies are also called milkweed butterflies, common tigers, and wanderers. They are well known in North America, both because of their distinct and recognizable coloration and because of their habit of migrating south in the late summer and early fall. I took this photo on the shore of Lake Michigan near Traverse City in early September, and this specimen was doubtless on its way to overwinter in warmer climates. No single insect is able to complete a full migration south and, in the spring, north again; it takes as many as five generation to complete this cycle.
