Description
A lovely monarch butterfly sipping nectar on a pink flowering monarda plant in a pollinator field in Sussex County New Jersey. Native to North America , this wildflower is a genus of plant in the mint family. Also known as bee balm, horsemine, bergamot and oswego tea, the plant was named for the Spanish botanist Nicolás Monardes, who wrote a book in 1574 describing plants of the New World. Monarda is a favorite of pollinating bees, butterflies and other insects. It is available in a variety of colors such as pale pink, lavender and red.
