Piet Mondrian excelled at geometry. Eventually, his art was reduced to the simplest vertical and horizontal lines and use of limited colors. But his desire to create a pure, universal beauty by removing any reference to nature and personal sentiment was confounded by his cat. It must have been subliminal, quite by accident, that this combination of boxes and lines resulted in a painting of his beloved cat. Did he ever realize it?
