They do look like a bit like regular rocks, Carol, only they are: "calcareous and siliceous rock deposits" in lakes or streams. Mono Lake is a "dead lake" & supports no life other than tiny brine shrimp that exist on the crusted shorline. As the lake receeds these tufa get larger. Today, unlike this shot from l976, many of these formations are more than 30' or more above the water level. Thanks for your comments, Carol. Take a trip there sometime and visit Bodie, the ghost town that's about 11 miles NE of Mono.
