Description
Aerial View of Wilpena Pound by Lexa Harpell.
To really appreciate the expanse and beauty of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia, a flight to get a 'bird's eye view' is a MUST!
I took a short 30-minute flight over the crater like natural pound with views across the beautiful continual smooth folds of the ranges.
The early morning colours showcase the iconic rusted red soil contrasting against the tree greens. Varying light can produce blue, purple, brown, gold, orange layered tones.
An ancient sea deposited sediments in a basin 800 million years ago, then 300 million year later, the sediments were 'pushed together' to form the multiple mountains - and over time erosion smoothed and shaped them as we see today.
This section within Wilpena Pound reminded me of a leaf skeleton - where water had washed away the soil in a pattern.
I marvel at the forces of nature creating sights that takes our breath away which makes us feel small in the scheme of time.
Stunning erosion patterns
The Flinders Ranges is 430 kms in length - one of the most spectacular sections is in the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park which includes a natural crater like pound, named Wilpena Pound.
