From "An Imaginary History of Olde Mistick"
And so, when old Mrs. Cameron, Deacon James Cameron's widowed mother who lived with him and his family, began acting strangely - standing up and singing during the Reverend Allenby's sermon, taking off her bonnet and overskirt in the middle of Sunday dinner - he moved her into the third-storey corner room and locked her securely in.
She was escorted down for meals and to church, where at the first sign of unruly behavior, she was summarily escorted right back to her garret. This window was her world unless she was taken out for necessaries for a few hours.
Clearly, Deacon Cameron was extremely concerned about his status in the community and what his neighbors thought; he conveniently chose to forget
Proverbs 23:22:
"Listen to your father who gave you life and do not despise your mother when she is old."
