Description
The global biosphere. A sequence of false-color satellite images of Earth's biosphere, showing the distribution of vegetation on land and phytoplankton in the oceans. The colors represent chlorophyll densities from red (most dense) through yellow & blue to pink (least dense) in the oceans; & from dark green to pale yellow on land. The ocean data was acquired by the Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS), a radiometer with optical & infrared channels on NASA's Nimbus-7 satellite. The land data is derived from the visible & infrared sensors of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) on the NOAA-7 satellite.
